PUBS in GRIMSBY and CLEETHORPES
and the Surrounding Area

supered55@hotmail.com

Grimsby, in ancient times, was a busy fishing port of some repute but is now a dumping ground for immigrants, fast food joints and luxury flats.
The River Humber, on the banks of which Grimsby is situated, has been described as the arseole of the world with Hull (a nearby city) stuffed right up it. If Grimsby has been spared the fate of Hull it is certainly a haemmoroid on the edge of said void.

Most of these pictures were taken during 1991 and a few in 1992.
Why were they taken? Simply as a record of a changing landscape which was of little concern at the time, but, I think, has gained interest as the gap between the taking of the pictures and the present widens.
The human race is fascinated with history and these photos are a small part of local history. Some of the pubs have disappeared, others have changed their character or their name, both in quite a few cases.
These pictures preserve a particular building on a particular day and will remain unchanged forever even though it may be difficult to place the exact location when the pub in question has gone.

These photos were originally taken for my own pleasure but I thought they might be of interest to other people in, or even out of, the area so I decided to put them on this website.

This site is dedicated to the fishermen of Grimsby, who, despite bad weather, poor conditions and constant danger, kept on going in the local pubs.
I shall add pictures to this page as time and tide allow.

Well, on with the show

  THE ALBION
  Cleethorpe Rd, Grimsby - 10/11/91

Old style pub, probably unchanged since Jesus.

  DAPPERZ
Promenade (next to Rail Station), Cleethorpes - 16/11/91

Pub that ceased to exist many moons ago.

  DARLEYS HOTEL
  Grimsby Rd, Cleethorpes - 20/10/91

  Had singalongs on Saturday night.

  FORESHORE INN
  Fitties, Humberston - 26/10/91

The zenith of entertainment on the Fitties camp, in fact the only
  entertainment.
Kids, bingo, fat trippers and crazed singers, what more could a body want?

  FREEMANS ARMS
  Freeman St, Grimsby - 17/11/91

Ok pub in a downbeat sort of way.

  THE HARVEST MOON
Station Rd, New Waltham - 26/10/91

  THE HOPE & ANCHOR
  Victoria Street, Grimsby - 20/10/91

  Has a decent pint.

  THE HUMBER
corner of Humber St and Cleethorpe Road, Grimsby - 2/11/91

This pub was handy for people who fell off the docks, straight in the
  door no messin.

  KINGS HEAD
  High St, Waltham - 26/10/91

Waltham is a rapidly exploding village outside Grimsby.

  No.2
Rail Station, Cleethorpes - September 1991

Unprepossessing on the outside and the inside was one step up from a
spit and sawdust job but it was a comfy watering hole for the old tossers.
It's been modernised now but the clientele haven't.

  Inside the No.2

  NUNSTHORPE TAVERN
  Nunsthorpe, Grimsby - 9/11/91

Ahhh... the nunny, welcome to the wild west.

  THE OAKTREE
  Norwich Avenue, Grimsby - 9/11/91

  Sucks like my vacuum cleaner

  THE OBERON
next to flyover, Cleethorpe Rd, Grimsby - 26/10/91

The Oberon has closed and been turned into offices.

  THE ROSE AND CROWN
Louth Rd, Scartho, Grimsby - 9/11/91

  RUTLAND ARMS/OLD MILL BREWERY
off Cleethorpe Rd, Grimsby - 17/11/91

  Modelled on Hitlers bunker

  SEVEN SEAS
  Coniston Avenue, Grimsby - 9/11/91

A pub for locals, no international trade.

  VALIANT
Wingate Parade, Willows Estate, Grimsby - 26/10/91

Not a pub or area for the faint of heart.

  WELLOW
  Kings Road, Cleethorpes - 26/10/91

Have a meal, play area for the kids.

  YARBOROUGH HOTEL
  Bethlehem Street, Grimsby - 3/11/91

  It's now Wetherspoons, pleasant hostelry.
